When I hear "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" & "Santa Claus is Coming To Town" by The Jackson 5 I think it odd they would have a Christmas album, due to them being Jehovah's Wittness.
From jw.org, "We believe that Christmas is not approved by God because it is rooted in pagan customs and rites.—2 Corinthians 6:17."
Furthemore, jw.org states, "Although we choose not to celebrate Christmas ourselves, we respect each person’s right to decide for himself in this matter. We do not interfere in the Christmas celebrations of others."
So, why am I mentioning all this? What does this have to do with money? I kept digging.
Was the Jackson family Jehovah's Wittness? "Most of Michael Jackson's family (except for his father) joined the religion in the early 1960s."
Since their father, Joe Jackson, was their manager, and since he was NOT a Jehovah's Wittness, it all made sense. The children and their mother did not celebrate Christmas but Joe celebrated making money and had not issue with Christmas, thus giving us a Jackson 5 Christmas ablum. He had no regard for their faith and beliefs because he regarded money as lord.
So then my brain starts thinking as to why the kids or their mother would not say anything against it. Well, from so many sources we learn that Joe Jackson was abusive. Women, at that time, didn't speak up against their husbands. In addition to that, the children and their mother feared the abuse. Additionally, their father was their manager, so they were following their mamager's advice.
Lastly, it would have been hard to stop the album, even if they tried, because of their devout faith in Jahova's Wittness. If they put up a fight (which, for the children, would seem dishonoring to their father, a command they would not break, Colossians 3:20 “Be obedient to your parents in everything, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.") they would be abused. When abused they had little to no recourse due to the time, and their faith. In the Jehovah's Wittness faith, they would not go to the police. They would go to their elders. Doing so would bring such shame, amongst other things, to their father, thus, dishonoring him, and God. Their mother, out of fear, would not say anything. Additionally, being poor and having so many mouths to feed, she would keep her mouth shut.
Thus my journey down the road of the Jackson 5 Christmas ablum, through the streets of Gary Indiana, across the tenetss of the Jehova's Wittness faith, to the abuse of Joe Jackson, which were fuled by necessity and greed, thusly comes to an end.
Now, when I hear those songs, I do not think them to be strange. I think them to be songs riddled with a background of sadness and tragedy. I take the songs for what they are and enjoy them, but, I also know that through a lot of pain, tears, hurt, and disregard for one's beliefs, and for love of money, we have the Jackson 5 Christmas Album.
